The Crveni Steni are one of the most popular destinations for mountaineers of Bitola and its surroundings, as well as one of the most important destinations for the period of the First World War in Macedonia. Bitola was occupied by the Entente forces in November 1916, after which the armies of the Central Forces withdrew to the mountains, from where they bombed the city. Consequently, in the fall of 1917, the forces of the Entente (mainly the French army) began a new offensive in which the main battle points were the Crveni Steni and the positions around the villages of Dihovo, Nizhopole and the snow-covered villages to the north and Krklino and the Kota 1248.
